Lucknow, 12 September 2025, Townhall Times: In a sharp and bold press conference held in Lucknow on Friday, Samajwadi Party (SP) national president and Member of Parliament Akhilesh Yadav raised serious concerns over the integrity of India’s electoral process. He warned that if the “looting of votes” continues unchecked, the Indian public may be forced to take to the streets, much like the situation seen in neighboring countries.
Addressing the media, Yadav urged the Election Commission of India to uphold impartiality and transparency, while accusing it of functioning like the “Jugaad Commission” of the BJP. His statement has stirred political debate across the country, not just because it questions the credibility of the electoral process, but also because it reflects the growing anger and frustration among the public.
“If the situation remains the same, the people of this country will rise like the people of Nepal,” Yadav said, drawing parallels to the protests in Nepal, where public anger against social and political inequalities led to mass movements. He pointed out that in India too, power remains concentrated in the hands of a select few, especially when it comes to the judiciary, government jobs, universities, industries, and economic resources. According to him, this imbalance is dangerous for the future of the country.
Yadav’s remarks resonate with recent warnings by several respected journalists and national television channels, who have expressed similar concerns. Many have highlighted how a small elite — often from dominant caste groups — controls disproportionate power and influence in India, leading to increasing social and economic inequality.
“India’s democracy cannot survive if elections are reduced to a mockery,” Yadav stated. He argued that the democratic structure must ensure fair representation and equitable access to power and resources. He added that if the Election Commission continues to be viewed as biased, public faith in democratic institutions will further erode, eventually pushing people toward unrest.
Political analysts believe that this is not just a campaign tactic, but a serious warning about the growing disconnect between the ruling elite and the common citizen. Akhilesh also accused the central government of systematically excluding marginalized communities from opportunities, while promoting the dominance of upper-caste and elite groups.
“India’s wealth and opportunities are being hoarded by a handful of people who have been in power for decades,” Yadav emphasized, calling it a systematic sidelining of the majority. He insisted that if the government does not act honestly and transparently, the country could be heading toward political chaos.
His comments have found an echo in recent media discussions, where prominent journalists have warned of a possible political storm if corrective steps are not taken. There is a growing consensus that the electoral system and democratic institutions must be protected from manipulation, favoritism, and elite capture.
With national elections looming, Yadav’s statement sets the tone for a highly charged political environment. The larger question, however, remains: Is India’s democracy truly inclusive, or has it become a tool in the hands of a privileged few? And if the current situation persists, is the Indian public ready to rise and reclaim its democratic rights — not just through votes, but through protest?
