RSS Centenary at Ambedkar Center: A Conspiracy Against Ambedkar and the Constitution?” Advocate Madanlal Kalkal

Townhall Times, New Delhi, October 1, 2025 – The celebration of the RSS centenary at the Ambedkar International Center is being seen as a direct conspiracy against Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the Indian Constitution. This raises serious questions: why is the nation’s Ram shown differently from their Ram, the nation’s Hanuman from their Hanuman, and the nation’s Bharat Mata from their Bharat Mata?

At 10:30 this morning, the Ambedkar Center—dedicated to Ambedkarism and the Constitution, and symbolizing the struggles of Dalits, backward classes, and social justice—became the venue for what critics describe as a symbolic appropriation by the BJP and RSS. For the BJP, the challenge is clear: Ambedkar represents justice, equality, education, science, freedom, and an inclusive society free of discrimination, while critics accuse the BJP and RSS of reinforcing Brahminical tendencies, casteism, and even social oppression. Linking RSS foundation day to themes like justice, the Constitution, or Dalit upliftment could naturally lead one to the Ambedkar Center, but the deeper conflict lies in the BJP’s long-standing ambition to amend the Constitution for political gain. Having failed to fully achieve this, the Modi government chose the Ambedkar Center to mark the RSS centenary, an act seen as a political message encoded in visuals and symbolism.

The event could have easily been organized at the BJP headquarters, Bharat Mandapam, or Vigyan Bhawan—venues that traditionally host such programs. Yet, selecting the Ambedkar Center seems a calculated strategy, suggesting an ideological victory over Ambedkarism. By aligning Ambedkar with RSS symbols, the BJP is seen as claiming that casteism and Brahminism have triumphed, signaling a symbolic war meant to weaken the Constitution and edge India closer to being declared a Hindu nation.

In recent years, symbolic changes have fueled these concerns. Religious processions have highlighted the Tricolor in specific ways, the Ashoka Chakra and other constitutional symbols have been sidelined, and statues of Ambedkar and Gandhi have been pushed to corners in Parliament. These moves echo historical attempts to destroy Buddha’s statues, convert monasteries into temples, and erase his legacy—efforts later exposed when rediscovery reshaped the narrative.

Adding to the controversy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today released a special commemorative postage stamp and coin for the RSS centenary, bearing the image of Bharat Mata on one side and the Ashoka Pillar on the other. This choice has itself raised questions. The RSS founders, K.B. Hedgewar and V.D. Savarkar, propagated a Hindutva ideology rooted in caste hierarchy, with Savarkar’s 1923 book Hindutva: Who is a Hindu? serving as the foundation. Ambedkar, in stark opposition, described Hindutva as the “graveyard of Hindu society,” rejected Manusmriti, and devoted his life to annihilating untouchability.

Shifting Ambedkar’s statue to the back in Parliament and altering national symbols outside constitutional framework sends the same disturbing signal. Once revered icons are marginalized, it becomes easier to quietly reverse or modify such changes later, while misleading the public into accepting a broader ideological project.
