Modi Sacrificed 95 Crores People for a Handful of Friends.
Ms.Mayawati slams government over poverty, inflation, unemployment, and misgovernance
By Ms. Raj Rani,
Townhall Times, Lucknow: Criticizing the recent proposal to hike railway fares, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the government. She said that for crores of Indians struggling under the burden of poverty, inflation, and unemployment, train travel is not a luxury or tourism but an essential and unavoidable part of life. She urged the government to reconsider this decision in the interest of the common people.
Mayawati remarked that most people in the country today are battling rising costs, shrinking incomes, and daily hardships. Against this backdrop, a move to increase railway fares appears less about public welfare and more like a profit-driven decision that goes against the spirit of the Constitution’s welfare ideals.
She further said that, just as the government imposed GST that added to the daily cost of living, raising railway fares only increases exploitation of ordinary citizens. She stressed that the government should show sensitivity and review such measures instead of adding to people’s misery.
Highlighting the plight of millions forced to migrate to other cities for survival, Mayawati said, “For these people, train journeys are not for fun or leisure, but a harsh necessity. The government should act with empathy and a welfare mindset instead of treating them as a market.”
The BSP leader argued that the government’s focus seems fixed on serving a handful of rich and powerful individuals, while ignoring the hundreds of millions who are desperate for dignified work and struggle to even afford one proper meal a day.
She revealed alarming statistics: almost 950 million Indians are now compelled to depend on at least one social welfare scheme to get by—a figure that has surged from about 22% of the population in 2016 to around 64.3% in 2025. According to Mayawati, this shows the government’s failure to create real economic opportunities, forcing more and more people to rely on state help.
Mayawati also criticized the way environmental regulations—especially vehicle pollution controls—are enforced, saying they unfairly target poor and middle-class families. Instead of only setting strict vehicle age limits, she suggested the government explore broader and more balanced solutions that protect livelihoods of millions working in transport and related sectors.
She added that the plight of migrant workers in Delhi and other major cities is especially worrying. According to her, the Delhi government’s actions—evicting migrants from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Bengal, and elsewhere without offering viable alternatives—reflect an insensitive and anti-poor mindset that is both tragic and shameful.
Mayawati concluded by warning that a government that burdens 950 million people for the benefit of a small elite is betraying the essence of democracy. She urged the government to prioritize the needs of ordinary citizens who keep the country running, rather than catering only to wealthy friends and corporations.
She called on the central and state governments to reverse fare hikes, rethink policies that add to living costs, and address the deep-rooted issues of poverty, unemployment, and rising costs that continue to trap millions in a cycle of helplessness and dependency.
