Kumbh Mela 2025 : Expansion of Economy , Political agenda and psychological harnessing

Kumbh Mela: The Impact of a Political, Economic, and Religious Event

Kumbh Mela is the world’s largest religious gathering, where millions of devotees come together every 12 years in four major cities (Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik). While it holds great religious significance, in recent years, it has evolved into an event that is not only a religious festival but also deeply influenced by politics, advertising, and commerce.

1. Religious Promotion and Psychological Impact

In recent years, the promotion of Kumbh Mela has taken a new turn, with the government and various political parties investing heavily in advertisements. These advertisements extol the greatness of Kumbh Mela, urging people to believe that if they do not attend this Kumbh, they will miss out on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Slogans like, “Whoever bathes in this Kumbh will have all their suffering washed away” are commonly used.

This approach takes advantage of people’s religious beliefs, attempting to create a psychological pressure on them. People are made to feel that unless they take part in this ritual, they will not be freed from their life’s sins. Thus, Kumbh Mela is no longer just a religious festival; it has also become a form of mental manipulation.

2. Political Gains and the Promotion of Hindutva

Kumbh Mela, particularly in recent years, has also been used as a political platform, especially by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). By linking the act of bathing and praying at Kumbh with national unity and Hindutva, political parties are promoting their ideology during this event. The BJP, for example, has used the Kumbh Mela to advance their political agenda.

The event is increasingly being used as a symbol of Hindutva, where religious and cultural ideology is being promoted. This is not merely about promoting religious unity, but also about strengthening the party’s political base by mobilizing voters around these beliefs. Religious practices are being used as a vehicle to influence politics and rally support for a specific ideological agenda.

3. Economic Growth and Business Expansion

Kumbh Mela has become a massive economic event in recent years. The influx of millions of pilgrims generates business and employment opportunities not just in the local area, but throughout the state and the country. Hotels, transportation, security, and other services experience a major boom.

Rail, air travel, and transportation services also benefit significantly during the Kumbh period, as millions of pilgrims travel to the venue. Additionally, agriculture and construction activities around the Kumbh area see increased demand as local businesses cater to the influx of visitors. Local people benefit from new employment opportunities, especially small traders and laborers involved in the festival.

The state and central governments also make heavy investments in organizing the event, which further stimulates the local and national economy. Administrative expenses such as security, water supply, sanitation, and infrastructure contribute to the economic upliftment associated with the event.

4. Religious and Political Alliance: A Sensitive Mix

Kumbh Mela, while being a symbol of faith and spirituality, has increasingly turned into a political and economic platform. Many critics argue that the BJP is using the event as a tool to promote its political agenda. By associating the religious activities of Kumbh Mela with Hindu nationalism, the party is trying to consolidate its voter base.

While the Kumbh Mela certainly promotes religious unity and collective spirituality, the political motives behind the event cannot be ignored. The influence of political parties in shaping the narrative around the Kumbh Mela is evident, and the religious atmosphere has been intertwined with political messaging.

5. Conclusion: Kumbh Mela – A Multidimensional Event

Kumbh Mela, which was once solely a religious event, has now become a significant political and economic gathering. Through this event, the BJP and other political parties are advancing their ideological agendas, while simultaneously fostering economic growth and generating employment opportunities. The commerce and trade around the event have boosted local and national economies, and services such as transport, tourism, and construction have seen substantial growth.

While the religious significance of Kumbh Mela is undeniable, its growing political and economic dimensions cannot be overlooked. The event has evolved into a sensitive mix of religion, politics, and economics, where different interests are at play. In this sense, Kumbh Mela has transcended its religious origins and become a multifaceted event that impacts society on several levels.
