Come and Throw Me Out of Mumbai If You Have Guts”: Dinesh Nirhua Sparks Row With Anti-Marathi Remark

Townhall Times | Mumbai

Popular Bhojpuri actor and BJP politician Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirhua’ has sparked a political storm after challenging his critics with the controversial statement: “Come and throw me out of Mumbai if you have guts — and I don’t speak Marathi.” The remarks, which surfaced through a viral video on social media late Friday night, have triggered sharp reactions across Maharashtra’s political spectrum, reigniting long-standing tensions over language, identity, and migration.

The Statement That Started It All

In the video, apparently recorded at a private gathering, Nirhua can be heard saying,

“मुझे कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता… मैं मराठी नहीं बोलता और अगर किसी में हिम्मत है तो मुझे मुंबई से बाहर निकाल कर दिखाए (It doesn’t matter to me… I don’t speak Marathi, and if anyone has the guts, let them throw me out of Mumbai).”

Though it is unclear what provoked the remark, the video quickly went viral, drawing widespread condemnation from regional parties and civil society.

Political Reactions Pour In

Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Anand Dubey called the remarks “an insult to the Marathi manoos,” adding, “Mumbai belongs to everyone, but disrespecting the Marathi language and daring us shows pure arrogance.”
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Sandeep Deshpande went a step further: “Nirhua thinks Mumbai is his personal property. He will soon learn this city respects everyone, but does not tolerate insult.”

Even leaders from Nirhua’s own party appeared uncomfortable. A senior BJP leader from Maharashtra, speaking off the record, said, “We do not endorse such statements. Mumbai’s diversity and the contribution of the Marathi community must be respected.”

Netizens and Civil Society React

Social media was flooded with criticism. Many Marathi users posted under the hashtag #RespectMarathi, saying Nirhua’s statement showed “disdain” for local culture. Others argued it was divisive and unnecessary, especially in a city known for its multicultural character.

Civil rights activist Teesta Patkar tweeted, “This is precisely the arrogance that damages India’s federal spirit. Mumbai is built by many, but the Marathi language and culture are central to its soul.”

Who Is Nirhua?

Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirhua’ is a superstar in Bhojpuri cinema and currently serves as a BJP Member of Parliament from Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh constituency. Known for his folksy style and large following among Bhojpuri-speaking migrants in Mumbai, Nirhua has previously courted controversy for provocative remarks but has rarely targeted a linguistic group so directly.

Underlying Tensions

Mumbai has long been home to migrants from across India, including large communities from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh. While these communities are an integral part of the city’s workforce, cultural tensions sometimes flare, especially when political figures appear to disregard Marathi identity.

The timing is delicate, with civic polls in Mumbai expected next year. Observers say such remarks could be used by regional parties to stoke sentiments and mobilize Marathi voters.

What Next?

As the backlash grows, calls have intensified for Nirhua to apologize. So far, he has not responded publicly. BJP’s Maharashtra unit is reportedly considering asking him to issue a clarification.

In a city celebrated for its inclusive spirit but fiercely protective of its Marathi heritage, Nirhua’s words have touched a raw nerve. Whether this controversy fades or escalates may depend on whether the actor-politician softens his stance—or chooses to keep challenging his critics.
