Mauritius PM Thanks India for Strong Development Support, Highlights Strategic Partnership

Townhall Times | Varanasi | Sept 11, 2025  Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam on Thursday praised India’s consistent support to his nation, acknowledging that Mauritius has greatly benefited from India’s expertise across vital sectors such as health, education, renewable energy, infrastructure, maritime security, and capacity building.

Speaking at a joint press interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi, Ramgoolam noted that India’s timely assistance has played a significant role in improving the quality of life for Mauritian citizens. “Over the years, successive governments of India have accompanied Mauritius in its journey of progress. The assistance we continue to receive is not only generous but transformative,” he said.

The Mauritian leader welcomed the announcement of a special economic package from India, which covers education, energy, healthcare, and infrastructure. He also highlighted the upcoming establishment of an Ayurvedic Centre in Mauritius as a unique initiative symbolizing cultural and medical collaboration between the two nations.

Ramgoolam recalled PM Modi’s visit to Mauritius earlier this year, when both countries elevated their relationship by signing a joint document on an Enhanced Strategic Partnership. “Our ties have now entered a more dynamic and forward-looking phase. Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed during this visit, marking a new era of bilateral cooperation,” he stated.

Key areas of discussion between the two leaders included improvements to the double taxation avoidance treaty, strengthening police training programmes, and cooperation in maritime surveillance of Mauritius’ vast exclusive economic zone. Ramgoolam also underlined Mauritius’ aspiration to enhance its presence in the Chagos Archipelago, including Diego Garcia, with India’s technical cooperation.

The Mauritius PM concluded by saying that the trust and friendship between the two countries are now at their strongest, setting the foundation for long-term collaboration in security, development, and cultural exchange.
