From DU to JNU: Rising Aggression of ABVP Students Sparks Concern

Townhall Times | New Delhi | October 19, 2025

The growing aggression of students affiliated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)  from Delhi University (DU) to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)  has once again raised serious concerns about the state of campus politics in India. What was once an ideological contest has now turned into a culture of intimidation and violence.

At Delhi University, an ABVP student leader, who currently serves as the student union secretary, publicly slapped a professor during a campus event. The incident was caught on camera and widely circulated on social media. Shockingly, a gang of the media projected her as a “youth icon,” glorifying an act that amounted to outright disrespect toward a teacher who was old enough to be her father.

Meanwhile, in JNU, tensions are escalating ahead of the upcoming student union elections. Clashes between Left-backed groups and ABVP activists have become frequent. Earlier, these confrontations were limited to debates and ideological exchanges, but under the current political climate, ABVP members appear increasingly militant. Reports of physical assaults and campus violence surface almost every week, often with allegations that police side with the ABVP.

Left and BAPSA (Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association) organizations claim that ABVP members routinely provoke them. They allege that during Friday’s General Body Meeting (GBM), ABVP students assaulted a woman participant, choking her and attacking several others.

In response, when Left and BAPSA students organized a peaceful march from Sabarmati Dhaba to the Vasant Kunj police station, they were stopped and detained by police. Around 27 students were taken into custody, including JNUSU President Nitish Kumar, Vice President Manisha, and General Secretary Muntaha Fatima. Police later filed an FIR against six of them under multiple sections related to unlawful assembly and assault.

Students have accused the police of misbehaviour and brutality inside the station, claiming that Left and BAPSA members were beaten and verbally abused. According to them, this pattern of intimidation reflects a broader attempt to silence dissenting voices on campus.

It’s not the first time JNU has found itself under fire. For years, the university has been a target of the BJP and ABVP, who accuse it of being a breeding ground for “anti-national” politics. Student leaders allege that the ruling establishment has even used outside goons to disrupt Left and Ambedkarite gatherings. BAPSA members say they’ve been threatened and mocked for carrying Ambedkar’s flags, often told they deserve to be “beaten with shoes.”

The JNU administration has promised an internal inquiry, but many students believe the issue goes far beyond disciplinary action  it represents a systematic effort to crush progressive and Ambedkarite movements within Indian campuses.
