New Delhi is witnessing a worrying rise in cases of kidnapping and missing persons, raising serious questions about the city’s law-and-order situation and public safety. According to the Crime in India 2023 report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), over 1.13 lakh kidnapping cases were registered across the country, with Delhi topping the list at 5,715 cases.
Recent Delhi Police data further highlights the gravity of the situation. In just the first 15 days of January 2026, more than 800 missing person complaints were filed. In 2025 alone, the city reported about 24,800 missing persons, averaging nearly 2,000 cases per month. Police officials say that many individuals are eventually traced, but cases involving children and teenagers continue to remain a major cause of concern.
Social welfare organisations believe that police action alone is not enough. They emphasise the need for collective responsibility—parents, schools, local communities, and civil society must work together to raise awareness and strengthen preventive measures.
Although this information was obtained from credible sources, several officials declined to comment when approached for confirmation of the figures and further clarification.
