Students Beaten, Held Without Reason: NILA Trust Calls for Probe Into Delhi Protest Arrests.

As of 24.11.2025, NILA Trust, which was helping two of the detained students, said that more than 15 students were allegedly tortured while being questioned by the police. The Trust also said that many students were picked up without being told the reason for their arrest or being allowed to call their families. All of them had taken part in a peaceful protest about Delhi’s worsening air quality.

Meanwhile, in court, Delhi Police claimed that some protesters had used pepper spray on police personnel during the India Gate demonstration and were even shouting slogans praising Madvi Hidma, a Maoist who was recently killed in an encounter. Two FIRs were registered, one at Kartavya Path Police Station for serious offences, under which five students were arrested, and another at Parliament Street Police Station against 17 others for stopping public servants from doing their duty.

During the hearing, the defence lawyers for nila trust said that at least three students were tortured in police custody and showed photos of bruises on their bodies. They argued that the students had only gone for a peaceful protest and were not involved in any anti-national activity. The magistrates hearing the matter sent the five students to two days’ judicial custody and the remaining 17 to three days’ judicial custody.

NILA Trust is now demanding an independent investigation into the alleged police mistreatment.
