Mayawati Slams BJP Over Pahalgam Attack, Calls Modi’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ a Hollow Slogan

At Kanshi Ram Anniversary Rally, BSP Chief Accuses BJP of National Security Failure and Economic Hypocrisy

Lucknow, October 9, 2025 — Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati launched one of her strongest attacks yet on the BJP government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during her fiery address at the 19th death anniversary of BSP founder Kanshi Ram Ji, held in Lucknow on Thursday.

Addressing a sea of supporters at the Manyavar Kanshi Ram Ji Memorial, Mayawati blended tribute with political firepower — accusing the BJP government of failing the nation on both security and economy, and warning that its slogan-driven politics was endangering the very foundation of India’s democracy.

“If the government had been alert, those women wouldn’t have lost their husbands”

Referring to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, where several civilians and tourists were killed, Mayawati said the tragedy was not merely an act of terror, but a result of negligence at the highest level.

“If the government had been alert and proper security arrangements had been made, those innocent lives could have been saved. Many women have lost their husbands, families have been destroyed — yet those in power are busy with election rallies and self-praise,” she said, her voice rising above chants of “BSP Zindabad.”

She accused the BJP-led Centre of using “nationalism” as a shield while ignoring the ground reality of insecurity in border regions. “When such incidents happen, they issue statements from Delhi and move on. But where is accountability? Who will answer these widows?” she demanded.

Attack on Modi’s Foreign Policy and Economic Claims

Mayawati also questioned Prime Minister Modi’s foreign policy, saying it appeared more concerned with “photo-ops and global image” than with defending India’s trade and economic interests.

“Our foreign policy must serve the national interest, not personal branding,” she said, adding that India’s growing trade imbalance and rising U.S. tariffs were proof that the government’s diplomacy had failed to protect Indian industries and workers.

She mocked the BJP’s repeated invocation of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) as “a slogan for television, not transformation.”

“If we are truly ‘Atmanirbhar,’ why are small businesses shutting down? Why are youth jobless? Why are we dependent on foreign products even for daily needs? The BJP’s Atmanirbhar Bharat has become Bharat Nirbhar on imports,” she declared to thunderous applause.

BJP and SP Two Sides of Same Coin, Says Mayawati

The BSP supremo did not spare other parties either, accusing both Samajwadi Party and Congress of exploiting Dalits and backward classes for votes.

“The SP remembers Kanshi Ram Ji only when it loses elections. The Congress gave Babasaheb Ambedkar Bharat Ratna after decades of delay. The BJP, meanwhile, uses Ambedkar’s name while destroying the Constitution he built,” she said.

She warned that the RSS-backed agenda to alter the Constitution and dilute reservation policies was gaining ground, and that only the BSP could defend Ambedkar’s vision.

Declares BSP Will Contest 2027 UP Elections Alone

Reaffirming her “no alliance” stance, Mayawati said,

“The BSP will contest the 2027 Assembly elections alone. We don’t need alliances with those who remember Dalits only at election time. In 2007, we won with full majority on our own strength — and we will do it again.”

She urged party workers to mobilize at the booth level and to beware of attempts by BJP and SP to divide Bahujan votes through “paid propaganda and fake organizations.”

Akash Anand Presented as Face of New BSP Generation

In a visible sign of internal unity, Akash Anand, BSP’s national coordinator and Mayawati’s nephew, shared the stage — his presence signaling the next generation of party leadership. Mayawati praised his efforts to expand the BSP base nationwide and asked supporters to stand firmly behind him.

“BJP has slogans, BSP has substance”

Closing her address, Mayawati said the BJP thrives on slogans and sentiment, while the BSP stands for “policy, performance, and protection of the poor.”

“Their ‘New India’ is rich for the few and hungry for the many. Our India will be one where no woman weeps because of government failure, no youth waits endlessly for a job, and no Dalit lives in fear,” she said.

The rally — which saw a turnout in lakhs — marked Mayawati’s loudest political comeback in years, combining emotional appeal with an unmistakable message to both the Modi government and her traditional rivals: the BSP is back in the arena, and it’s not playing softly anymore.
